The Diocese of Rochester is the second-oldest diocese in England, founded in 604 AD by St Augustine of Canterbury as part of his mission to spread Christianity throughout Anglo-Saxon England.
Established under the patronage of King Æthelberht of Kent, Rochester became an important centre of Christian worship and learning, with Rochester Cathedral serving as its spiritual heart for more than 1,400 years. Throughout its history, the diocese has weathered Viking raids, the Norman Conquest, the Reformation, and significant social change, while continuing its mission of serving communities across Kent and south-east London. Today, it remains a vibrant part of the Church of England, combining a rich historical heritage with a commitment to faith, education, and community engagement.
The Chancellor of the Diocese is David Willink. David Willink is a barrister in Lamb Chambers, practising and writing in the fields of civil and ecclesiastical law. He sits regularly in the County Court and Family Court as a Deputy District Judge. He was appointed Chancellor in 2024 having previously been a Deputy Chancellor in the Diocese. David is also Deputy Chancellor in the Diocese of St Albans.
Patti Russell is the Registrar for Canterbury Diocese and has held the role since 2023 having previously been Deputy Registrar in both Diocese since 2022. She has expertise in high-profile and complex external reviews, safeguarding and clergy discipline cases. Patti is recognised for her work on sensitive and strategically significant matters across the Church of England.
Ann Beswick is the Registry Clerk for Canterbury Diocese and has held this position since 2018.
